Welcome to Claremont,

Claremont is located 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles and positioned 34.12 degrees north of the equator and 117.71 degrees west of the prime meridian, near Pasadena, (home of the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl), at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. Claremont is best known for its tree-lined streets, historic buildings, and college campuses. But more than that, Claremont is a vital, secure community. The City of Claremont offers programs and services for all age groups and maintains a full range of housing opportunities. Claremont Sponsors an array of successful commercial and industrial complexes,  encouraging enviable development and promoting new ideas  while protecting the environment and respecting traditional values.

   Claremont Community

Claremont's current success is the result of actions taken by the community's founders over 100 years ago. Trees planted at the turn of the century now compete with nearby mountain peaks for dominance of the local skyline. The Colleges have become some of the nation's most highly respected educational and cultural institutions. The Claremont Colleges are located here. The historic central core remains a vital residential and retail district, one of the last true "downtowns" in the region. And the spirit of the City's original "town meeting" form of self-governance lives on in today's active and involved citizenry, citizens who continue to build on the successes of the past in order to ensure an even brighter future.

History

Claremont was one of about thirty city sites laid out in the corridor between San Bernardino and Los Angeles by the Santa Fe Railroad. A large population boom was expected, but it did not last long and some of the towns disappeared! Claremont was not one of them. Later, a local land company transferred its properties and holdings, including the Hotel Claremont, to the "new" Pomona College in 1888. Most likely, Claremont was named for Claremont, New Hampshire when is was founded in 1887. Until the mid 1970's, it remained a fruit processing center. Today, not only the educational opportunities are in Claremont, but there is manufacturing, including specialty makers of scientific instruments and semiconductors. Claremont was founded April, 1887 and incorporated on 3 October 1907. Claremont was only 3.5 square miles when it was incorporated. The city now includes over 14 square miles of land area.

Claremont Hills Wilderness Park

The entrance to this park is at the north end of Mills Avenue in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.. Much of the area is rugged and inaccessible. The park includes 1220 acres and has many fire roads which may be used for hiking, biking, walking leashed dogs and horse riding. No other improvements have been made to the park area. The area includes Marshall Canyon, the Angeles National Forest and up to the San Bernardino County line. The elevation varies between 1,800 feet and 3,000 feet above sea level at the top of Potato Mountain.
